To state the absolute obvious, human trafficking is one of the most heinous atrocities to be (still) occurring, even in developed nations. Reading about this, as the topic of my Master's thesis, has greatly influenced not only my dreams (never positive dreams anymore...excellent), but has made me highly appreciative of good people. I know this sounds like a gross oversimplification, but the fact that individuals are CAPABLE of treating other human beings in such a horrible way should really make us appreciate those who try to make the lives of others better, whether on a small or large-scale way.
The dehumanization that occurs during the process of human slavery is astounding-- and one really starts to devalue themselves, believing that they are no longer "good," and many times, not even worth being saved. On a different scale (I hesitate to say "smaller scale," since this is also a terrible event), any sort of abuse, whether neglect, putting-down, or physical violence, seems to have this same effect. The majority of these individuals don't know what it's like to be treated well, and if they are treated well, they are very suspicious of why it is occurring, or think that they simply don't deserve it.
I cannot express strongly enough how important it is to value people and appreciate them. Without this, they are not only likely to be suffering internally, but this suffering is very likely to repeat itself-- the victim becomes the perpetrator.
Sorry for such a depressing post, but it irks me, as a society, that we do not verbalize how much we appreciate one another for the little things. Our T conductor, the person who delivers our mail, someone who lets you park in a spot that they had originally wanted (never in Boston, but I've seen it happen elsewhere). You never know what someone is going through, and how uplifting that can be.
